Deaf Literacy Program
The Deaf Literacy Program has been designed and developed for Deaf adults in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is being delivered by the Newfouindland and Labrador Association of the Deaf (NLAD) in partnership with the Adult Learning and Literacy Division of the Department of Education, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Deaf Literacy Program is intended to enable Deaf learners to become more functionally literate in order to actively participate in economic, social and cultural activities in an English-literate society. The program includes four components:
The Deaf Literacy Program is taught in American Sign Language (ASL) by Deaf instructors. It uses an outcome-based approach that enables learners to upgrade their skills while they study at their own pace in an adult learning environment.
Who Should Enroll?
The Deaf Literacy Program is suitable for Deaf and Hard of Hearing adults who use American Sign Language as their first language of communication. Specifically, the program has been designed to meet the needs of Deaf adults.
Program Duration
The Deaf LIteracy Program runs for 40 weeks starting in September and ending in June.
Program Cost
Deaf individuals interested in registering for the Deaf LIteracy Program do not have to pay any fees to enroll. All books and other learning resources are provided free of charge.

The Deaf Literacy Program provides adults in the Deaf community with educational opportunities that will enable
them to become more self reliant and lead independent lives.
