Deaf Literacy Program (DLP)
The Deaf Literacy Program has been designed and developed for Deaf adults in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is being delivered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of the Deaf (NLAD) in partnership with the Adult Learning and Literacy Division of the Department of Education, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Deaf Literacy Program is intended to enable Deaf learners to become more functionally literate in order to actively participlate in economic, social and cultural activities in an English-literate society. The program includes four components:
- English Literacy - Reading and Writing
- Mathematical Literacy
- Computer / ICT Literacy
- Workforce Literacy
The Deaf Literacy Program will be taught in American Sign Language (ASL) by Deaf instructors. It uses an outcomes-based approach that will enable learners to upgrade their skills while they study at their own pace in an adult learning environment.

Who should enroll in the Deaf Literacy Program?
The Deaf Literacy Program is suitable for deaf and hard of hearing adults who use American Sign Language as their first language of communication. Specifically, the program has been designed to meet the needs of Deaf adults:
- who have dropped out of school without attaining a senior High School Diploma
- who have been out of school for a extended period of time
- who need to improve their reading and writing skills using the English language
- who need to improve their knowledge and skills in mathematics
- who would like to learn basic computer and Internet skills
- who need to improve their knowledge related to employability
Program Duration
Deaf Literacy Program will run for 40 weeks starting in September and ending in June.
Program Cost
Deaf learners do not pay any fees to enroll in the Deaf Literacy Program. All books and other learning resources are provided free of charge.
